learning in our program

We're a homeschooling family inspired by Charlotte Mason in the early and middle grades; modeled by Comprehensible Input strategies for secondary language acquisition; and guided by John Senior for later grades leading up to college. All together, we've spent decades in public school classrooms, mostly in middle and high school language classes, but most importantly, raising our five children and our niece in a CM homeschool.

Our program grew out of a need to instruct our own children in formal Spanish, so we can honestly say we strive to teach your children as we teach our own. Expect to occasionally have some of our own children in classes with your children, at least until our youngest boy is 18 years old in 2037!

All of our courses share the following characteristics:

  • Comprehensible Input, which prepares the soil for language learning. Students hear, read, and see language that they can understand.
  • Living Books, which put engaging, narrative stories at the heart of plots. Well-developed characters capture our students' attention and allow language to sink deep roots as students are motivated to learn the outcomes of the cuentos, stories. Our students start with texts like Aesop's Fables, engage with a healthy offering of living books in Spanish, and hopefully (we dream) end with classics of Spanish literature like Don Quijote.
  • Poetry which permits reciting and memorizing poetry in class and for your homeschool routines. One of our happiest memories as homeschooling parents have been times when our children were moved to recite lines from poems memorized for Morning Circle Time. Like prayer, life calls verses at unexpected, auspicious times.
  • Conversation in Spanish anchored in a rich feast of visuals and experiences. We discuss beauty in artwork from classic and contemporary artists or short animations that move the spirit.
  • Narrations in Spanish provide students weekly opportunities to process and practice in the target language, at the student's ability level.
  • Our spines are old textbooks that are similar in form to what Charlotte Mason used, the Gouin method. While not exactly the same in method, they provide students with language that is easily understood, and is engaging. We provide audio recordings for each chapter.

Our technology

Our goal is effortless and simple technology with an intense focus on supporting your child's learning. We deliver our courses on the ZOOM and MOODLE and FORMATIVE platforms.

Zoom is our virtual classroom.

Moodle hosts our class assignments, delivers our spines, shows our videos, and allows our communication. (It's like "Canvas".)

Formative hosts our grammar instructional work. "It transforms traditional lessons into data-informed, real-time assessments that enable educators to create powerful formative-learning opportunities with their students. In the moment - when it matters most!"

We provide everyhing your child needs in those three platforms. We do not link to outside video or social media web-sites that we don't control.

course descriptions

course title: intro to Spanish

Our courses are designed for two-three years of instruction, traditional middle school grades 7, 8. Our purpose is to introduce Spanish language to students who:

  • are new to the language (beginners / novice)
  • are Form 3 students (grades 7, 8, ages 12-14)

We offer two streams:

  • intro to Spanish, "Nature Lore and Art" which uses beautiful artwork and captivating stories about nature as a thematic spine (more information will be provided)

info-streamnature

  • intro to Spanish, "Myths, Fables, and Legends" which uses tiered-versions of Greek & indigenous myths, legends of Spanish speaking countries, and Aesop's Fables as a thematic spine (more information will be provided)

info-streammyths

Typically, a student will take two years, one year of each "stream" as we alternate our offerings.

Course is two times a week, low-stress, high engagement. Our pace is steady, but slower paced for repetition and absorption. We provide a lot of audio-visuals for students.

Tuition: $700 for one school year (August - May)

Classes: 2x a week, 45 minutes

Monday & Wednesday "Nature Lore & Art stream" stream
→ 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time

Tuesday & Thursday "Myths, Fables, and Legends" stream
→ 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time

Classes are "virtual", on Zoom, Moodle, and Formative platforms.

Not for high school transcripts, but designed to prepare students for the second year, high school course (Spanish 2) .

Starting in August of 2025, we have adjusted our curricula to allow greater flexibility for families. Students can sign up for either of our two courses (Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs), as we have redesigned our reading schedules to allow "year 1" and "year 2" students to be in the same class. Why this change? First, to allow greater opportunities for families to schedule their academic weeks. Second, we shifted towards greater conversational activities where both levels can practice at their own pace. Returning students can model some of the language structures we use. And since the teacher manages conversations, he can adjust to the student's individual level. In the past, we saw "year 1" students with great ability, often outpacing some of the "year 2" students in growth. We felt it would benefit our students to have "mixed year courses".

course title: Spanish 1, 2, 3

Our courses are designed for two-four years of instruction for Form 4 and Form 5, traditional high school grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Our purpose is to develop:

  • understanding of spoken and written Spanish
  • increase fluency in reading and speaking
  • a basic introduction into grammar (present, past, future indicative tenses & parts of speech)

For students who:

  • are new to the language (beginners/novice)
  • are Form 4 or Form 5 students (grades 9-12, ages 14-18)

Typically, students will take Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 to complete a sequence. But those who would like to continue can take Spanish 3 and even hispanohablantes if they're ready.
